Science

Intent

At South Ascot Village Primary School, our intent is to provide a high-quality science education from Year 1 to Year 6 that inspires curiosity, encourages exploration, and develops a secure understanding of the world. Through the Kapow Primary Science curriculum, we deliver a well-sequenced and progressive programme that builds strong scientific foundations and supports pupils in developing a lifelong interest in science.

Our curriculum develops pupils’ substantive knowledge across biology, chemistry and physics, alongside the disciplinary skills of working scientifically. Pupils are encouraged to ask questions, make predictions, carry out investigations, observe closely, record findings and draw conclusions. Scientific vocabulary is explicitly taught and revisited to enable pupils to communicate their understanding confidently and accurately. We aim for all pupils to see themselves as scientists and to recognise the relevance of science to everyday life and future learning.

Implementation

Science is taught from Year 1 through to Year 6 using the Kapow Primary Science curriculum, ensuring full coverage of the National Curriculum and clear progression of knowledge and skills. Units are carefully sequenced to build on prior learning and revisit key concepts, allowing pupils to deepen their understanding over time. Teachers follow Kapow’s structured lesson plans and make use of knowledge organisers and practical resources to support consistent, high-quality teaching across the school.

Lessons are enquiry-led and include regular opportunities for hands-on investigations, enabling pupils to develop and apply working scientifically skills in an age-appropriate way. Scientific vocabulary is modelled and reinforced, and pupils are encouraged to record and present their learning in a range of formats. Ongoing assessment informs teaching, supports pupil progress and ensures misconceptions are identified and addressed, with appropriate support and challenge provided for all learners.

Impact

As a result of our science curriculum, pupils at South Ascot Village Primary School develop a secure understanding of key scientific concepts and the ability to work scientifically with confidence. Pupils demonstrate curiosity, engagement and enjoyment in science lessons and can explain their thinking using accurate scientific vocabulary.

By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils have retained essential scientific knowledge, can apply skills across a range of contexts, and understand the role of science in everyday life and the wider world. They leave primary school well prepared for secondary science, equipped with the knowledge, skills and positive attitudes needed to succeed in future learning and beyond.
