At South Ascot Village School we aim to nurture pupils’ creativity and imagination, encouraging them to think like artists and designers. We follow the Kapow Scheme of work.

Intention

The intention is for pupils to develop the confidence to experiment, express ideas and communicate meaning through visual and tactile media. The goal is to inspire pupils to become confident, creative artists who can express their ideas and thoughts about the world. 

• Curriculum Aim: Provide a skills-based curriculum that allows for individuality and high attainment.
• National Curriculum Alignment: Ensure pupils meet the end-of-key-stage expectations through a structured and ambitious program.
• Engagement: Create a safe environment for experimentation where pupils take risks and develop self-esteem. 

Implementation

South Ascot Village School teach Art every half term.  The Kapow Primary scheme will be delivered through five key strands that progress from EYFS to Year 6: 

• Strands: Generating Ideas, Using Sketchbooks, Making Skills (Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, etc.), Knowledge of Artists, and Evaluating.
• Formal Elements: Lessons focus on drawing line, shape, tone, texture, pattern, and colour.
• Lesson Structure: Units are sequenced to revisit skills with increasing complexity, ensuring a spiral curriculum where knowledge is built over time.

Kapow Primary Art and design scheme of work is designed to be fully adaptable for pupils with SEND.

Impact

The success of the curriculum is measured by what pupils know and can do by the end of their primary education. 

• Proficiency: Pupils leave proficient in various techniques, including drawing, painting, and sculpture.
• Critical Thinking: Children can evaluate and analyse works of art—including their own—using specific subject vocabulary.
• Attitude: Pupils develop a passion for art and an appreciation for its historical and cultural importance.
• Assessment: Progress is monitored through formative assessment, summative end-of-unit performance, and review of sketchbooks.
• Formative Assessment: Kapow Primary’s Art and design lessons include ongoing assessment opportunities, such as questioning, retrieval practice and interactive activities. These enable teachers to assess understanding in real time and adapt their teaching accordingly.
• Summative Assessment: Each unit provides an Assessment quiz, which allow teachers to measure pupils’ understanding at key points. This tool helps gauge how well pupils have retained key knowledge and skills over time.
