South Ascot Village School

Swimming

We provide swimming instruction as part of our PE curriculum, with the flexibility to decide how many hours of swimming lessons we provide and which year groups receive instruction, ensuring all pupils develop the required skills. Our swimming programme is designed to ensure every child becomes a confident, safe swimmer by the time they leave our school.

At South Ascot Village Primary School, we're proud to have our own on-site swimming pool – a fantastic facility that enables us to provide high-quality swimming instruction to all our pupils.

We open the pool as early in the Spring Term as the seasonal climate permits and operate it throughout the Summer Term.

Benefits for Our Pupils

Building Essential Life Skills. Swimming is a statutory requirement of the National Curriculum. Our pool enables us to teach pupils to:

  • Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • Use a range of strokes effectively, such as front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke
  • Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

Supporting Physical and Mental Wellbeing. Our swimming pool contributes significantly to pupils' overall health and development. Swimming provides:

  • Regular physical activity that supports fitness and healthy lifestyle habits
  • Opportunities to build confidence and resilience
  • A fun and engaging way to stay active
  • Skills that pupils can enjoy throughout their lives

Enhancing Learning Across the Curriculum. Swimming lessons support learning in multiple ways. For example:

  • PE Curriculum: Swimming forms a key part of our physical education programme, helping pupils develop physical literacy and movement skills
  • Personal Development: Learning to swim builds self-confidence, determination and the ability to overcome challenges
  • Safety Education: Pupils learn vital water safety knowledge that could save their lives
  • Social Skills: Swimming lessons provide opportunities for teamwork, encouragement and supporting peers

Accessibility and Inclusion. Having our own pool means we can:

  • Provide regular, consistent swimming instruction throughout the year
  • Tailor lessons to meet the individual needs of all our pupils, including those with SEND
  • Ensure pupils who need additional support can receive it in a familiar, comfortable environment
  • Avoid the logistical challenges and costs of travelling to external facilities
