PE & Sport

Facilities

At South Ascot Village School, we are fortunate to have excellent facilities that enhance our PE & Sport provision. Our fantastic outdoor area includes a hard court with a full-sized netball court and a large grassed field with three sets of football goals, allowing for a wide variety of team games and sporting activities. We are also extremely lucky to have two large woodland areas used to facilitate our Forest School provision where the Outdoor Adventurous Activities (OAA) element of the PE curriculum is fulfilled. Our prize facility is our open-air, heated swimming pool, which allows every pupil to swim twice a week in the summer term to enhance water confidence and improve swimming strokes.  Indoors, we have a spacious hall used for dance, gymnastics, and indoor lessons, equipped with high-quality gymnastics resources, including wall bars, ropes, a range of apparatus, and mats. The school also has balance bikes for the youngest members of the school to use and specialist equipment for all subjects covered in the curriculum. SAVS also has an outdoor exercise area with fitness equipment suitable for our pupils.

PE curriculum

The Physical Education curriculum at South Ascot Village Primary School plays a key role in supporting every child’s physical, social, and emotional development. Every pupil receives two one-hour PE lessons each week, with one lesson delivered by their class teacher and the other taught by a specialist PE teacher. This ensures a consistent, high-quality provision that supports both skill progression and enjoyment.

Our PE curriculum is broad, inclusive, and progressive, giving pupils the opportunity to experience and develop skills across a wide range of activities and sports. These include games such as football, netball, rugby, badminton, hockey, and rounders, as well as gymnastics, dance, athletics, swimming, and health and fitness activities. Children will learn the importance of teamwork, sportsmanship, playing by the rules, and gain an understanding of different sporting techniques and skills.  They will also learn how exercise affects their bodies, including changes in heart rate and breathing rate, as well as how to improve strength and stamina. Pupils are taught how to keep themselves and others safe during physical activity, developing an understanding of warming up, cooling down, and using equipment responsibly. By Year 6, pupils will be playing competitive games in all sports with tactical awareness, preparing them for secondary school PE. Physical Education lessons help children make informed choices about their own health, wellbeing and will generate a life-long affinity with sport.

OAA is fulfilled during Forest School sessions.

Sport outside the classroom

In addition to curriculum PE, South Ascot Village School aims to provide a wide range of opportunities for pupils to take part in sporting fixtures, festivals, and competitions outside school. Through our close links with local secondary schools and cluster schools, our pupils have the opportunity to attend inter-school competitions and events, as well as specialist masterclasses. These opportunities promote teamwork, sportsmanship, and enjoyment, while inspiring pupils to stay active beyond the school day whilst experiencing new sports.  Some of the venues this year include Ascot United Football Club, St Georges School and Charters School. All of which are premier facilities where our pupils are provided with challenge, develop confidence and have massive pride in representing South Ascot Village School.

Overall, PE and sport at South Ascot Village Primary School aim to equip children with the skills, knowledge, and positive attitudes they need to lead active, healthy, and confident lives.

Whole school sporting events

Sports day at South Ascot Village School takes place on our 10-lane sprint track and is a chance to showcase the athletic abilities of all our pupils.   All areas of fitness are tested, including speed, agility, co-ordination and teamwork in the relay.

This year the school is participating in a whole school 'Dance-athon' where every member of the school community will dance together on the playground to three songs, one dance being specially designed with the SAVS school name.  This event will build a strong feeling of togetherness, generate happiness, improve well-being and fitness after hours of practice!
