British Values

At South Ascot Village School, we are committed to fostering a learning environment where British Values are understood, respected, and lived out every day. These values form an essential part of our curriculum and school life, helping us nurture responsible, thoughtful, and engaged members of our diverse community.

What Are British Values?

British Values are the principles that underpin our society and democracy. At South Ascot Village School, we teach and uphold these values to ensure our pupils grow into active citizens who respect the rights and responsibilities of living in modern Britain. These core values are:

  • Democracy
  • The Rule of Law
  • Individual Liberty
  • Mutual Respect
  • Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs

How We Embed British Values at SAVS

Our vision and values guide how we bring British Values to life across our school community:

Democracy: We encourage pupils to have a voice through our School Council, with representatives from every year group. This empowers children to contribute to decisions that affect their school life, reflecting our belief that “together we have strength.”

The Rule of Law: Clear, consistent behaviour expectations help pupils understand the importance of rules in keeping everyone safe and respected. Our house system—Birch, Oak, Pine, and Sycamore—reinforces positive behaviour and encourages children to take responsibility for their actions, embodying our value of determination to succeed (Fish).

Individual Liberty: We nurture each child’s unique talents and aspirations, supporting their dreams and encouraging curiosity and enquiry (Cat). Pupils learn to make informed choices in a safe environment where their rights are respected.

Mutual Respect: Our school community celebrates diversity and fosters care for everyone (Bee). This respect is foundational to maintaining a harmonious and inclusive environment where all pupils and adults feel valued.

Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs: Through our curriculum and assemblies, pupils explore and appreciate the wide range of cultures and beliefs represented in our school and the wider world. This openness reflects our commitment to embracing diversity and making links and connections (Spider) to deepen understanding.

Examples of British Values in Action

  • Our vibrant School Council meetings give pupils a platform to voice ideas and influence improvements, teaching democratic participation.
  • The house system motivates children through rewards for good work and behaviour, reinforcing respect for rules and community.
  • Celebrations of cultural festivals and learning about different world religions promote tolerance and respect.
  • The Canopy specialist resource supports autistic pupils, exemplifying our inclusive ethos and commitment to individual liberty and respect for all.

Why British Values Matter to Us

At South Ascot Village School, British Values are more than just principles to teach; they are lived experiences that prepare our pupils to succeed in an ever-changing world. They align closely with our vision of a united school community where learning is a journey, creativity is encouraged, and every individual is supported to flourish.

Get Involved

We encourage parents and carers to support our work in promoting British Values by engaging in school activities, supporting the School Council, and fostering respectful attitudes at home. Together, we can ensure our children grow into confident, caring, and responsible citizens.

British Values are integral to the culture and curriculum at South Ascot Village School. Through democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance, we create a safe, inclusive, and inspiring environment. These values echo our school's commitment to caring for everyone, embracing diversity, and moving forward together as one community.
