EAL Support

At our school, we value the rich languages and cultures that our children bring with them. We support pupils who are learning English as an Additional Language (EAL) so they feel confident, included, and able to achieve their best.

Children learning English may be at different stages. Some may be new to English, while others may speak English confidently but still need support with reading, writing, or academic language. We recognise that learning English is a journey, and we celebrate progress at every step.

How we support EAL learners

  • A warm and supportive start for new pupils, helping them settle into school life

  • High-quality classroom teaching that uses clear language, visuals, and practical activities

  • Opportunities to develop speaking and listening skills through play, discussion, and group work

  • Targeted small-group or individual support where needed

  • Careful assessment to track progress in English and across the curriculum

  • Staff who understand the needs of EAL learners and adapt lessons to support understanding

Working with families

We believe that strong partnerships with families are essential. We encourage parents and carers to continue using their home language, as this supports learning and identity development. We are always happy to discuss your child’s progress and how we can work together to support them.

Our aim

Our aim is for all children, including those learning English as an additional language, to feel confident, valued, and successful. We want every child to develop strong English skills while also taking pride in their home language and culture.
