Mathematics

Intent

At South Ascot Village Primary School, we strive for all learners to develop fluency in the fundamentals of mathematics through regular and varied practice, with increasingly complex concepts over time. Our goal is to guide pupils towards a deeper conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts, alongside the fast and accurate recall of key facts. Pupils will develop the ability to reason mathematically (supported by an expanding vocabulary of mathematical terms). We provide frequent opportunities for children to build on their problem-solving skills, enabling them to tackle both routine and non-routine problems confidently.

During their time at South Ascot Village Primary School, children will develop an age-appropriate understanding of mathematics which will support them to apply their learning to real-life contexts. Throughout all key stages, teachers use concrete manipulatives and a variety of pictorial representations that progress towards abstract written methods, deepening pupils' understanding. In Key Stage 2, pupils will begin to use more formal written methods for recording their work. At South Ascot Village Primary School, we endeavour to set challenging and motivating tasks that inspire pupils to talk confidently about their learning in mathematics.

Implementation

Implementation

  • At South Ascot Village Primary School, we follow the White Rose Education (version 3) scheme of work from Early Years (EYFS) through to Year 6. This is carefully aligned to the National Curriculum and Development Matters (for EYFS).
  • All children from Year 1 to Year 6 have access to printed work booklets for each maths topic which contain tasks that focus on fluency, reasoning and problem-solving in each step.
  • Manipulatives and hands-on resources are integral to all lessons, ensuring that all learners have the support they need.
  • Mathematics is taught as a discrete subject five days a week.
  • Some pupils participate in pre-teach intervention groups which help to reinforce key concepts and enhance understanding of mathematical vocabulary. These sessions help to boost confidence and encourage participation in the main maths lessons.
  • Each term, all pupils take part in ‘Maths Morning’, a creative morning of activities designed to build maths skills in a fun and engaging way.

Impact

Mathematics is assessed regularly through the White Rose formal assessments each term for Years 1-6, alongside the KS2 SATs and the Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check. Summative test results are analysed and used to inform teachers’ planning, as well as intervention groups. These assessments help to identify specific groups of target children, such as those from EAL (English as an Additional Language), PP (Pupil Premium), and SEN (Special Educational Needs) backgrounds.
