At South Ascot Village School, pupils learn French across Key Stage Two. We use the Language Angels scheme of work to support high-quality language teaching and to ensure clear progression in skills and knowledge.
Learning a modern foreign language enables pupils to communicate in another language, develop curiosity about the wider world and gain an understanding of different cultures and traditions.
Our intent for teaching Modern Foreign Languages is to inspire pupils to develop a genuine interest and positive curiosity about foreign languages. Through learning French, pupils are encouraged to explore the relationship between language and identity, broaden their understanding of other cultures and develop respect for cultural differences.
We aim for all pupils to:
Develop confidence in listening, speaking, reading and writing in French.
Build a secure foundation of vocabulary and phonics.
Develop accurate pronunciation and intonation.
Gain an awareness of other cultures and ways of life.
Be well-prepared for further language learning at Key Stage Three.
Our long-term aim is for pupils to become enthusiastic and life-long language learners.
French is taught weekly across Key Stage Two using the Language Angels scheme. This ensures a structured and progressive approach to language learning.
Teaching includes:
A strong focus on vocabulary and phonics.
Opportunities for pupils to listen to, speak, read and write in French.
Repetition and retrieval to support long-term memory.
Interactive activities such as songs, games, role play and spoken responses.
Exposure to authentic French language and culture.
Lessons are carefully sequenced so that pupils revisit and build upon previous learning, allowing knowledge and skills to deepen over time.
By the end of Key Stage Two, pupils will:
Communicate in French using simple words, phrases and sentences.
Demonstrate accurate pronunciation and intonation.
Understand basic grammar concepts appropriate to their stage.
Read and write short phrases and sentences.
Show confidence when speaking in a foreign language.
Demonstrate an understanding of French culture and traditions.
Pupils leave South Ascot Village School with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to continue their language learning successfully at secondary school.
Assessment in French is ongoing and largely formative. Teachers assess pupils’ understanding through:
Observation of speaking and listening activities.
Questioning.
Class discussions and responses.
Tasks provided within the Language Angels programme.
This allows teachers to identify gaps in learning and adapt teaching accordingly.
At South Ascot Village School, we believe that all pupils should have access to high-quality language learning. Lessons are adapted to meet the needs of all learners through:
Visual supports and dual coding.
Repetition and overlearning.
Modelling and scaffolded tasks.
Opportunities for collaborative learning.
These approaches ensure that all pupils can participate fully and make progress in French.
Learning French supports pupils in developing cultural awareness and global citizenship. Pupils learn about French traditions, celebrations, daily life and similarities and differences between cultures, helping them to develop respect and understanding for others.
